While we did automotive glass replacement for 48 years we have recently decided to discontinue doing this work. Perhaps an explanation would be helpful. Quite a few years ago the automotive companies started holding the glass in place by using sealants instead of the rubber or neoprene gaskets. This allowed the manufacturer to meet the rollover standards which were implemented by the Federal Government. In other words the windshield and other glass became part of the structure of the vehicle. This also meant that the replacement process became much more involved, and requires persons with professional responsibilities and liabilities. If the glass became disengaged in an accident and someone was injured the Glass company is liable. About the same time the Insurance Companies instituted their call centers to direct the replacements to their recommended replacement vendors. We were one of those who agreed to the pricing restrictions placed on us by the Insurance Companies. They soon established pricing which, if we were to do the work ,would not have left any profit in the work. The only way to do this work, and make a profit, would be to cut corners in the installation or to use unqualified installers. We refused to compromise in our standards of quality and therefore decided to end this portion of our business. We deeply regret taking this action but will not compromise in the quality of our work. In taking your vehicle glass in for replacement, be sure that the installers are Certified by the National Glass Association, and that they use the full cut out method in replacing the glass. The full cut out method requires that all the sealants are removed down to the metal. Most replacement companies will not do this because it takes longer. Insist on it! This should ensure that any rust or loss of adhesion will be addressed prior to installation of the new sealants. EDWARDS GLASS CO. 32000 Plymouth Rd. Livonia, MI 48150
